James M. Price
James M. Price was born on 4 August 1841 in Duval County, Florida, the county around Jacksonville. His gravestone gives 1841 and his death certificate 1842. His father was James Price, also born in Duval County, and his mother Elizabeth, born in North Carolina.
He married Susan D. Worrell, known as Susie, who was born in South Carolina about 1848. Their children included Fannie, born about 1868; Josephine, called Josie, born in 1869; Charles Worrell Price, born in February 1872; Susie Belle, born in 1877; and George Benjamin, born on 25 March 1888 at Barberville in Volusia County.
In June 1880 the census found the family at Ellaville, in Madison County, a sawmill town on the Suwannee River. James was 38. With him were Susie, 32, the children Fannie, 12, Josie, 11, Charles W., 9, and Susie, 4, and a young man from Georgia, John H. McCaney, 27. The Price men worked with timber all their lives. James was a mill man, his son Charles was a sawyer, and his son George was foreman of a cypress company.
Susie died before him. James spent his last weeks at Orlando, where his daughter, Mrs. J. H. McCaney, lived, and where he had been for one week when he died on 4 November 1910, of hepatic congestion, after a month's illness. He was 68 by his certificate and 69 by his stone. His usual home is written as DeLand and Duval County. Mrs. McCaney gave the details for the certificate.
He was buried on 6 November 1910 at DeLand, in Oakdale Cemetery, in the southeast corner along the south fence. His stone is a tall marble shaft topped by a carved open book. Ten years later his son George was shot and killed at Oak Landing.
