James Orr was born on 25 January 1804, the eldest child of William Orr and Rachel Rodgers of Ryegate. His grandfather John Orr had come from Scotland in 1774.

On 11 March 1828 he married Margaret Harvey, the daughter of John Harvey. She had been born on 22 December 1802. They lived first in Topsham, in Orange County, and later moved to Groton, where both died. They belonged to the Reformed Presbyterian church.

Their children who lived included Mary C. Orr, born 9 March 1831, who married first David Whitehill and then Wesson Crown; Robert Harvey Orr, born 2 May 1838; William S. Orr of Peacham; and Jane, who married Dugald Stewart. Three other children died young.

Margaret died on 22 May 1887, aged 84. James died on 22 March 1892, aged 88. They are buried in the Walter Harvey Cemetery under a tall marble obelisk carved ORR at its base. Its face reads "James Orr, died Mar. 22, 1892, aged 88 yrs" and "Margaret Harvey, his wife, died May 22, 1887, aged 84 yrs".
