James Wilson
James Wilson was born on 30 December 1854 in Mississippi, to parents who were both born in Mississippi too. A memorial to his daughter Julia gives his full name as James Monroe Wilson and says he was called Jim.
About 1879 he married Matilda, a Mississippi girl about seven years younger than he was. A memorial to their daughter Julia gives her maiden name as Stroud. They farmed in Beat 4 of Franklin County, in the piney woods of southwest Mississippi. A beat in Mississippi was one of the five supervisors' districts a county was divided into.
The census taker reached the Wilson farm on 14 June 1900. James was forty-five and a farmer, and he owned the farm free of any mortgage. He had been married to Matilda for twenty-one years. She had borne nine children, and eight were living. All eight were at home that summer: Mary, 19, Julia, 18, Clara, 15, James, Jr., 12, Ada, 9, Rhoda, 7, Burniece, 5, and Anna, 3. A young farm hand, Albert King, 22, lived with the family and worked on the farm. James could read but could not write, and he spoke English.
Three years later, on 27 May 1903, his daughter Julia married Henry Travis in Franklin County. The couple raised their own large family in the same beat of the county.
