Jan Lammerts Bartelds
Jan Lammerts Bartelds was born at Veendam on 16 January 1828, the son of Lammert Jans Bartelds, a wever or weaver of twenty-eight, and Trijntje Jans Engers. A brother of the same name had lived nineteen days in December 1826, and the new boy was given the dead child's name. Brothers and sisters followed at Veendam and Westerdiep through 1845. His father died in August 1847, when Jan was nineteen.
He went to sea. Veendam in those years was a town of shipowners and sailors, its men working the coasting trade and the Baltic in small vessels, and Jan was a zeeman, a seaman, when he married Harmina Bijl at Veendam on 26 January 1856, aged twenty-seven. She was twenty-two, a labourer's daughter of the town. Their children were born at Veendam and Oosterdiep in 1857, 1858, 1860, 1865, 1871, 1872 and 1873; the daughter of 25 August 1860 was Maria, who married the barge skipper Jan Tiemeijer in 1884 and went to Michigan.
Harmina died at Oosterdiep on 24 April 1901. Jan outlived her by less than four months and died at Molenstreek, the mill quarter of Veendam, on 10 August 1901, aged seventy-three. That same year his daughter Maria sailed for Grand Rapids.
