Jane Shields was born in Virginia in 1794, by her memorial on 4 October. Her family moved to eastern Ohio, where she married Parkis Woodruff in what became Mahoning County. They were Presbyterians and raised eight children on one of the best farms in the county.

Her parents are not known. She was probably one of the Shields family of Boardman, who came from Augusta County, Virginia. A county history of 1882 says a Thomas Shields bought a farm and two mill sites at Boardman in 1798, then went home to Augusta County and died. His sons Thomas, James and William came out in 1800 and settled on the farm. The younger Thomas was a miller, "the first miller west of Rochester, Pennsylvania." The county court records add a William Shields of Boardman who died by June 1806. The court appointed "the widow Agnes Shields & John Shields" to administer his estate, and Thomas Shields the miller was one of the sureties. Jane may have been William's daughter. She was eleven when he died. She was "of the township of Boardman" when she married in 1818, and she named a son John Shields Woodruff in 1822.

In 1851 the family moved to Louisa County, Iowa. That September, within months of arriving, she died, aged fifty six years and eleven months. She was buried at Long Creek. Her stone reads "JANE, Wife of Parkis Woodruff".
