Jennie Flasher
Jennie Belle Flasher was born on 27 June 1874 at Three Springs, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. She was a daughter of George W. and Elizabeth (Painter) Flasher. Her brothers and sisters included Cora, Laura Blanche, Sam, Albert, Harry, Joseph Estal and Vinton.
In September 1893 she was living with her parents in Cromwell Township. On the 26th her intended, E. Howard Hammond, a farmer's son from the same township, took out their marriage license at Huntingdon, giving her age as "Twenty one June 27, 1893" and her parents as "Geo. W. and Elizabeth Flasher". J. M. Cutshall married them in Springfield Township on 28 September 1893. By June 1900 they had four children and were farming in Cromwell Township, next door to Elliott's parents. They had eleven children: Claire, Earl, Sylvia, Golda, Emma, William, Hazel, Mildred, Myrtle, Marvin and Lester. Some time after the children were born, she and Elliott separated. He died in 1944.
In September 1922 her son Earl's first wife, Laura, died of typhoid fever, leaving a son, Paul, less than two months old. Jennie took him and raised him.
Jennie had been seriously ill since September 1962. She died at 10:45 in the morning on Thursday, 17 January 1963, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Golda and John Powell, at Hesston. The Daily News of Huntingdon printed her obituary the next day. It named eight children as survivors: Sylva Bitner of Altoona, Golda Powell of Hesston, William of Rockhill Furnace, Hazel Waite of Rockhill Furnace, Mildred Cutshall of Mapleton Depot, Marvin of Mapleton Depot, Lester of Rockhill Furnace, and Paul of Saxton. Paul was the grandson she had raised. Four children had died before her. "There are 50 grandchildren, 78 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren," the obituary said. Four brothers survived her: Sam Flasher of Three Springs, Albert of Kimberton, Harry of Phoenixville and Vinton of Holsopple.
She belonged to the Evangelical United Brethren church. The Rev. Charles Rhodes of the Three Springs EUB charge led her funeral on Sunday, 20 January, from the Ott funeral home at Orbisonia, and she was buried in Three Springs Cemetery.
