Joannes Schrenck
Joannes Schrenck lived at Oberflacht, a small Catholic village under the Swabian Alb in the Tuttlingen country of Württemberg. Oberflacht had no parish church of its own. Its people were baptised, married and buried at Seitingen, and every record of him was written there. The clerks spelled his name Schrenckh.
He was born about 1677. The year comes only from his age at death. He married Maria Bidermann, whose family was also of Oberflacht. The wedding was before 1707, because it is not among the Seitingen marriages from that year on. It belongs in the older book, which runs to 1706.
Three of their children are known. Lucia was baptised on 3 December 1707, Joannes on 23 May 1710 and Lucas on 14 October 1712. The same two godparents stood for all three: Josephus Münck and Anna Maria Münck, both of Oberflacht. A boy named Bernardus was confirmed at Oberflacht in 1709 as "filius Joannis Schrenckh", a son of Joannes Schrenck. He may have been an elder son born before 1700, but the list names no mother.
Oberflacht had a second Schrenk household in the same years. Joannes Georgius Schrenk was a carpenter, "faber lignarius", and his wife was Prisca Mutschlin. In May 1710 the clerk began a baptism for the carpenter's daughter Brigitta and wrote the wrong parents: "Joannis Schrenckh et Mariae Bidermännin". He struck the line through and wrote Georg Schrenk and Prisca Mutschlin. Ten days later, on the same page, he entered this couple's son Joannes.
Joannes stood godfather to the children of Joachim Distel and Rachel Münck in 1708, in 1710 and in February 1712.
He died on 3 October 1713. The priest wrote: "obiit Joannes Schrenckh de Oberflacht vir triginta sex annorum optimae famae Christianus." Joannes Schrenck of Oberflacht had died, a man of thirty-six years and a Christian of the best repute. The carpenter Joannes Georgius went on baptising children in 1715, 1716, 1718 and 1720, so the man who died in 1713 was Maria Bidermann's husband.
His children were five, three and not quite one. Maria Bidermann died six months after him, on 2 April 1714, entered as a widow. From 1714 the Distel and Münck children had a new godfather, Christian Schrenk, beside the same godmother.
In October 1723 his sons Lucas and Joannes were confirmed together at Oberflacht. The clerk entered them as "Lucas et Joannes Joannis Schrenck p: m:". The letters stand for piae memoriae, of pious memory, his mark for a father who had died. Lucas became a tailor and farmer at Oberflacht and lived until 1785. A Joannes Schrenck, very probably the younger son, was a witness at Lucas's second wedding in 1759.
