Joel Godwin
Joel Godwin was born on 4 May 1812 in North Carolina. By the mid 1840s he was farming in Wilcox County, Alabama, where his sons William Henry and James Robert were born in 1844 and 1846. Family accounts say he married Jane on 17 January 1843.
On 15 December 1850 Joel Godwin, 38, a farmer born in North Carolina, was head of dwelling 936 in Wilcox County, with Jane, 25, also from North Carolina, William, 5, and James, 4. He owned no land of his own that year. Martha Jane, Arnett and Nancy followed in 1850, 1853 and 1862.
His son William Henry's death record, in 1928, names his father as "Jope" Godwin and his mother as Jane, and gives Fomminsville as the father's birthplace. Joel is buried in the Godwin Family Cemetery, on the old Godwin farm near the Wilcox and Lowndes county line about four miles from Braggs. His stone gives only his birth, "Born May 4, 1812", and his death date is not known.
