Johanna Hanks
Johanna Hanks was born in 1841, and her gravestone memorial gives her birthplace as Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. She was called Hanna.
On 3 November 1858, at about seventeen, she married Geert Soulen, a carpenter from Hanover, at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The clerk wrote her surname as Hank. Their first son, Gerrit, later George Garrett, was born in Wisconsin about 1859, and Dora followed in 1861. In March 1865 her husband enlisted in the 51st Wisconsin Infantry and was away until the end of August. John was born in 1866 and William in 1869.
The family moved to Cherokee County, in the southeast corner of Kansas, and her youngest son, Lewis, was born there on 7 March 1873. Hanna settled at Galena, the lead mining town on the Missouri line, and lived there nearly forty years. Her husband went west. He was living in San Francisco by 1887 and died at the Washington Soldiers' Home at Orting in 1893.
She later married Harry Miller, and Galena knew her as Mrs. Harry Miller. She spent her last years at her home in Galena Heights with her son William. She suffered for several months from cancer of the throat and died there at four in the morning on Monday, 4 January 1915, aged seventy three. The funeral was held at the house at two the next afternoon. The Rev. O. C. Bronston of the First Methodist Episcopal church conducted it, and she was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. Her stone there reads "Hanna Soulen Miller, 1841 1915".
