John Andrew Kovacs Jr.
Born September 17, 1908 in Slovakia and carried to America as an infant, roughly one to two years old, aboard the ship that carried his parents back to America. They had married in Pennsylvania in 1906 and gone home to Slovakia before he was born. He married Mary Elizabeth Eggett on July 2, 1938 at St. Procopius Church in Westville, Illinois, her family's parish in the Vermilion County coal country. The 1950 census finds the family in Black River Township, Lorain County: John at a trailer factory, Mary keeping house, the three girls, and his father-in-law George Eggett living with them. The census taker marked him a citizen; the paperwork said otherwise, and because he had arrived without citizenship papers he and one of his daughters later drove to Columbus to untangle it so he could draw Social Security at retirement. He died December 2, 1986 at St. Joseph Hospital in Lorain, Ohio, and was buried three days later at St. Mary's Cemetery in Elyria.
