John Baldwin
John Baldwin was born at Milford, Connecticut, on 22 May 1688, a grandson of the Joseph Baldwin who helped settle Milford. A Baldwin family history of 1881 says a grandfather Ward left land at Newark, New Jersey, to John and several of his brothers and cousins, and that John and one of them took possession of it in 1716. He spent the rest of his life at Newark, and the 1881 book says he was buried at Connecticut Farms.
He made his will on 11 August 1764. His son Ezekiel, long married and with grown children, was left five shillings, the token sum that told the world a child had already had his portion. Enos got three acres of salt meadow in the Great Meadows of Newark, the marsh along the Passaic where every farm cut its hay. The daughters Phebe, Mary and Jemima shared half the movables after their mother's third, two granddaughters named Osborn had a share when they came of age, and the youngest son Nathan got the land. The will was proved on 14 January 1773.
His daughter Jemima married Col. Samuel Potter. Mary married a Wade of Union and Phebe an Ogden.
