John Blackburn

John Blackburn was born in Virginia on 30 June 1760. His gravestone says so. A family genealogy of 1959 says the county was probably Buckingham. He was the fourth child of William and Rachel Blackburn.

While he was a boy the family moved to South Carolina. By 1768 his father held a land grant in what was then Berkeley County, in the part later cut off as Newberry District. His father died in 1782.

He married Nancy, who was born in the Edgefield District on 22 September 1769. They lived in the Newberry District, where all their children were born, twelve in all between 1787 and 1812. He bought land there in 1800, and in 1808 he helped appraise the estate of a neighbour, Drury Malone. In 1796 he joined the Methodist Church.

In 1817 he sold his 308 acres on Indian Creek, part on Johnson's Branch and part on Long Branch, for $1,500. Nancy released her dower on 27 October. The family went west to Perry County, Alabama, and was settled there by 1818. In 1819 the Mount Zion Methodist Society was organized in his home, and he was chosen its first steward. A steward kept the society's accounts and saw to the preacher's support.

Nancy died in 1830. He lived on another twenty-three years and died on 24 December 1853, aged ninety-three. He was buried in the Mount Zion Cemetery at North Perry. The New Orleans Christian Advocate printed his obituary on 1 April 1854.
