John Boyd
John Boyd, known as Squire Boyd, was born on 11 October 1795 in the Newberry District of South Carolina. The date is on his gravestone. His parents are not known. The family Bible lists eleven brothers and sisters, from William, born in 1789, to Jefferson, born in 1814.
On 25 September 1817, in the Newberry District, he married Elizabeth Blackburn, the daughter of John and Nancy Blackburn. That year both families left South Carolina for Alabama, then a territory newly opened to settlers. A family genealogy of 1959 calls him one of the first settlers on Old Town Creek in Perry County in 1817.
He settled at Brush Creek, where the censuses of 1830, 1850 and 1860 find him. In 1826 he resigned as commissioner of Section 16 of Township 20, Range 8. The sixteenth section of every township was reserved for schools, and local commissioners managed it. He was a member of the Mount Zion Methodist Church.
He and Elizabeth had ten children. Their eldest, Nancy, married Malcolm Demus Canon in 1836. Their son William Thomas married Cyrena Hopkins, a daughter of Lambeth Hopkins.
Elizabeth died in August 1856. On 3 February 1857 he married Chelly Marinda Nixon, a widow born in North Carolina. The 1860 census values his real estate at $800 and his personal estate at $30,255. In 1870 he was still in Perry County, aged seventy-four. He died on 9 November 1872 and was buried in the Fellowship Church Cemetery.
