John Calvin Hanna
John Calvin Hanna was born in Tennessee on 19 April 1792. A sketch of his son in Cutler's History of the State of Kansas, published in 1883, says he was "a native of Tennessee, and lived to reach the ripe age of eighty-two years, and died in Leavenworth, Kan., on the 25th day of April, 1874."
He married Lucy Green Spilman, of Mercer County, Kentucky, in 1821. Their daughter Mary Elisabeth Frances was born in 1823. They were living in Pope County, Illinois, when their son Benjamin was born at Golconda in 1825. Benjamin was their only son. He became a newspaper founder in Illinois and Kansas and an army quartermaster in the Civil War.
By 1840 John was in Montgomery County, Illinois. In 1860 he was living at Chester, in Randolph County, where the census gives his birth as 1795, in Tennessee.
John died at Leavenworth on 25 April 1874 and was buried at Mount Muncie Cemetery, Lansing, Leavenworth County. His headstone reads "JOHN C. HANNA / BORN April 19, 1792 / DIED April 25, 1874 / AGED 82 Yrs & 6 d." Lucy survived him and died in Saline County, Kansas, in 1886.
His parents are not known. A Hanna family settled at Golconda in 1819: John Hanna, born in Pennsylvania in 1764, who died in Pope County in 1834, and his wife Margaret Hamilton. They are an obvious candidate, but a Pope County deed counts against them. On 16 December 1842 the heirs of Elkanah Allen Hanna quitclaimed land to "Margaret Jane Blatter ... our sister." The heirs, his brothers and sisters, included "John C Hanna of the County of Franklin." A compiled Blatter family history makes Margaret Jane a daughter of John and Margaret Hanna. John Calvin Hanna is found in Montgomery County in 1840 and Randolph County in 1860, never in Franklin. The John C. of the deed was probably a younger man of the same name, born in Tennessee about 1815. If so, John and Margaret Hanna already had a son John C., and they are less likely to be his parents.
