John Collins
John Collins was born in Ireland. He swore in 1847 that he was born in 1807; his age at death points to 1801. Which Irish county he came from is not recorded.
He was in Glasgow by the late 1820s. A John Collins married an Agnes Cameron at Barony parish, Glasgow, on 18 May 1828, and that is very probably this couple. Their daughter Margaret was born in Glasgow on 25 February 1832.
He was living in the United States by 30 May 1842. In Philadelphia, on 5 November 1847, he declared his intention to become a citizen. By the 1850s he had moved to Wayne County, in the northeast corner of Pennsylvania, and on 2 September 1856 he was naturalized at Honesdale, the county seat. He signed his petition with his own name.
He farmed in Damascus Township, at Rutledgedale, on 121 acres. His daughter Margaret married George Mawdsley, and John sold them his farm in 1861 and bought it back in 1864. His wife Agnes died in 1879.
In September 1891 he made his will, leaving everything in equal shares to his three children: Thomas Collins, Margaret Maudsley and Rachael Marks. By then he signed with his mark. He died on 12 May 1893 and is buried with Agnes at Old Galilee. Margaret died two months after him.
