John D. Askins
John D. Askins was born in 1820 in Knox County, Ohio, north-east of Columbus. He married Nancy Starner, an Ohio woman two years older, in Effingham County, Illinois. The county clerk issued the licence on 14 June 1841, and a justice of the peace married them the next day, 15 June 1841. Their son William was born on 3 August 1846 in Hilliar Township, Knox County. Soon afterward the family was in Effingham County, Illinois, in south central Illinois, where a daughter, Sarah Lovina, and a son, Jonathan Nelson, were born.
John died young, in the middle 1850s, and was buried in Agney Cemetery in Effingham County. His stone there reads John Askins, died 185-, with the last figure worn away, and below it Nancy his wife, died 1872. His memorial gives his death as 1856 and its place as Kentucky. By January 1856 Nancy was a widow, and on 28 January she married George Clark Eccles, an Englishman from Stretford near Manchester and a widower with five children of his own. In 1860 the three Askins children, William, 14, Lavina, 12, and Jonathan, 10, were living in the Eccles house with their mother.
The children stayed in the Beecher City country for years. Sarah Lovina married John L. Larimore and died at Beecher City in 1933, aged 86. Jonathan Nelson died at Hammond in Piatt County in 1934. William married Delitha Jane Daniel in 1864, took his family west to Kansas in the 1870s, and died at Winfield in 1915.
