John Dane

A tailor, of Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, who is known better than most men of his rank because his son sat down in 1682 and wrote out the family's life. The narrative opens with him: "In my infansy, and yet I ueary well Remember it, my fatther Remoud his habetation from barcumstid to Starford. Thare he bout a house, and brout his famely theather; and he went back againe to finesh matters with him he had sould his two, and my mother and hur children ware at Storford."

So the move to Bishop's Stortford was done in two halves and the family sat in the new town with no money and no acquaintance while he went back to close the sale. That is the whole of what the record says about his business, and it is more than most tailors get.

He was at Bishop's Stortford while John Norton was curate there, the same Norton who later ministered at Ipswich and Boston. His sons went over first: the narrator was at Ipswich by 1638 after a short stay at Roxbury, and the father had a house lot granted him there entered on the ninth of the second month, 1639. He was probably made a freeman of Massachusetts in 1641. In 1643 he married Annis Chandler, the widow of William Chandler of Roxbury, and he died at Roxbury in 1658. His widow married a third time, John Parminter, in 1661.

His children were Alice; John of Ipswich, who wrote the narrative; Elizabeth, who married James How; and Francis, minister of Andover for forty eight years, who did not believe the witchcraft cases.
