John Dodge
John Dodge and his wife Margery had their family in Somersetshire, and he never came to America. He died about October 1635, leaving a will. His parents, his own parish and any date in his life but the year of his death are not known.
His will, read together with that of his son Richard and with the East Coker parish register, establishes the English origin of the Salem and Beverly Dodges.
Three of his sons are known. William went to Salem in 1629. Two depositions give his age as about seventy in February 1678/9 and about seventy six in September 1680, and the later one, thought the better, puts his birth as early as 1604. Richard appeared at Salem in 1638 and "desired accommodation" of the town, three years after his father's death. He was probably born as early as 1602 and died on 15 June 1671. The King was obstructing emigration by then, so Richard probably left England without royal permission.
Michael stayed at East Coker in Somerset, was churchwarden there in 1670, and rented land in England from his emigrant brother. His children's baptisms are in the East Coker register: Margery in 1639/40, John in 1641/2, William in 1643/4, Michael in 1646/7 and Richard in 1650. That William crossed and married at Beverly in 1665. A daughter Mary died in England leaving a son John.
