John Douch

Baptised at Merriott on 19 November 1706, the son of John Douch and Amy Fookes. He was the second child of theirs to be called John: the first had been baptised on 1 November 1705 and buried on Christmas Day the same year, at seven weeks old. He was born about eleven months after that burial and given the name again.

On 7 July 1728 he married Susanna Hooper at Merriott, a daughter of the parish born there in May 1703. Seven of their children were baptised at Merriott across twenty one years: John in April 1729, buried six weeks later; Hannah in 1731; a Mary in December 1733 and another Mary in November 1734; John in July 1739; a Samuel at Christmas 1742, buried at three and a half in May 1746; and Samuel, the last of them, on 1 October 1749. That youngest Samuel is the man who married Honour Hutchins of Dinnington in 1778 and was buried at Merriott in 1830.

His own burial cannot be picked out with certainty. There were two or three John Douches in the parish at once by the 1760s, one of them with a wife Ruth whose marriage is not in the Merriott registers and another with a wife entered as Kath, and the parish burial list gives a John Douch on 16 April 1769 without an age or a wife's name to sort them by.
