John Fobes
John Fobes came to Bridgewater from Duxbury, in Plymouth Colony. Mitchell's history of the town counts him among its original proprietors and says he settled there. The original proprietors were the men who held the first shares in the purchase of the Bridgewater lands, and each share carried land in every later division. He is the first of the family known in New England. Where in England he came from has not been traced.
His wife was Constant, a sister of Experience Mitchell. Their children were John, Edward, Mary, Caleb, William, Joshua and Elizabeth.
He died about 1661. He made a nuncupative will, a will spoken aloud in his last sickness, before William Brett and Arthur Harris, who could swear to what he said. His son John died the same year, at George Allen's in Sandwich. In 1662 his widow married John Briggs of Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
His sons' lives are known in outline. Edward stayed at Bridgewater and became a deacon of its church. William married Elizabeth, a daughter of Constant Southworth, about 1667, settled at last at Little Compton, and served with Captain Church in King Philip's War. Joshua was killed in that war, with Captain Michael Pierce of Scituate, near Attleborough in March 1676. Caleb went to Norwich.
