John G. Risenhoover
John G. Risenhoover was born about 1810 in Tennessee. By his son Jasper's account, given to a newspaper in 1922, he came into Missouri in 1822, a year after statehood, and settled first on the Current River at old Van Buren, a few miles up the river from the present town of Van Buren and on the opposite bank. He stayed there a short time and then moved to Wayne County, in the eastern Ozarks, where he farmed for the rest of his recorded life.
In 1840 he headed a household in Wayne County, and three other Risenhoovers, Jacob, Joseph and Benjamin, headed households in the same county, probably brothers or cousins who had come up from Tennessee with him. During the Civil War a Jacob Risenhoover served the Union in the Enrolled Missouri Militia while John's son Jasper fought for the Confederacy. His wife Frances was born about 1812 in South Carolina. The census of 1850 found them in Wayne County with seven children, all born in Missouri: William, Jasper, Margaret, John, Francis, Athaly and James, the eldest entered at thirteen, though Jasper by his own reckoning was already past twenty. A family of Howards, Mary, twenty-one, born in Tennessee, and four children born in Illinois, lived in the same house. In 1860 John, fifty-three, and Frances were in Logan Township with Margaret, Athaly, James, and two younger girls, Martha and Louisa; the older sons had gone, Jasper to Arkansas. Nothing later has been found for him.
His son Jasper's family recorded him as John G. Risenhoover and his wife as Francis Julia. The surname, in a county where no other family bore it, is spelt Risenhoover in both censuses.
