John Hallock
John Hallock was a son of William Hallock of Aquebogue, in Southold township on Long Island, and his wife Margaret. He was probably the eldest son. In the Southold tax list of 1675 he was rated at £82, beside his father's £361. In 1683 he was rated at £80.
He married into the Society of Friends, the Quakers, and joined them. His wife was Abigail Swazey. When his father made his will in February 1682, he left John land at Wading River. The same will took away the share of any son who left the Protestant faith or neglected the public worship of God. A historian of the family read that clause as written in sorrow over John.
By the Southold census of 1698 he had moved to Brookhaven, to Setauket on the north shore. His sons John, Peter, Benjamin, William and Jonathan all settled near him there. His house, covered with cedar, was still standing in 1863.
The Westbury Monthly Meeting of Friends recorded that he and his wife both died at Setauket in 1737, "both very ancient and in unity with Friends." A monthly meeting was the Quaker body that kept the records of its members' births, marriages and deaths. She died on 23 January 1737. He and his son John lie in a small Quaker burying ground beside the main graveyard at Setauket, under small stones marked only "J. H."
