John Howard
John Howard came from England with his brother James and settled at Duxbury, in Plymouth Colony. He spelled his own name Haward. Mitchell's history of Bridgewater says he "was young when he came over, and it is said, lived in Capt. Miles Standish's family". Miles Standish was the captain of Plymouth Colony's militia and lived at Duxbury. James, it is said, went on to Bermuda.
In 1643 John was on the Duxbury list of men able to bear arms, the colony's roll of men liable for militia service. About 1651 he went inland to West Bridgewater as one of its proprietors and first settlers. Mitchell calls him "a man of much influence in the new plantation" and one of the first military officers in Bridgewater. In 1657 he took the oath of fidelity there, the oath of loyalty every householder swore to the colony government.
He married Martha, a daughter of Thomas Hayward, another of the first settlers of Bridgewater. Their children were John, James, Jonathan, Elizabeth, Sarah, Bethiah and Ephraim. Elizabeth married Edward Fobes, later a deacon of the Bridgewater church.
By 1670 he was licensed to keep an ordinary, which was a tavern licensed by the court to lodge travellers and sell drink. Mitchell, writing in 1840, adds that "He was licensed to keep an Ordinary or Tavern as early as 1670, and it is remarkable that a public house has been kept there by his descendants ever since till within a few years". He died about 1700.
