John Kelly

Children include Sidney

John Kelly married Mary Cheever, who came from Manchester, England. They settled first at Dracut, Massachusetts, on the Merrimack River, where their son Silas was born on 12 December 1795. Soon afterwards they moved to Barnet, Vermont, and their son Sidney was born there on 16 September 1806.

Their children were Silas, Ephraim, Sidney, Thomas, Nancy, Abia, Rhoda and Lydia. Silas kept a tavern at McIndoes and ran a stage line from Haverhill, New Hampshire, to Stanstead in Quebec. He served two or three terms as sheriff and helped catch and convict a band of counterfeiters at Groton in the Bristol Bill case, which the family record calls "one of the most remarkable cases in the annals of the state." Thomas had nineteen children and moved to northern Iowa. Nancy married John Blair. Lydia married John Ricks of Stanstead, and her son Sidney was killed in California. Abia and Rhoda married and lived at Potton, Quebec.

Family tradition, printed in 1923, said that John came to America with two brothers, William and James, and that their father had been trained for the priesthood at Dublin before he went to Manchester and married a woman named Mary Scott. It also said that all three brothers were wounded at Bunker Hill and served as scouts later in the Revolution. Nothing of the time has been found to bear it out.

John is buried in the Center Cemetery at Barnet. Mary outlived him and died at Troy, Vermont, at the home of their son Thomas, aged 93.
