John Lewis Sullivan

b. 1844 · New York
Born 1844, New York
Children include Harriet

John Sullivan was born in New York about 1844. His son George's death certificate gives his birthplace as New York, New York, the city. A family tree calls him John Lewis Sullivan and gives his parents as Dennis B. Sullivan and Ann, both born in Ireland. No record found names them.

About 1860 he married Elizabeth Wear, or Weir, a year or so older than he was. Their daughter Harriet Rebecca, called Hattie, was born in Indiana in August 1861. Mary F. followed in the 1860s, and George W. was born at Terre Haute, Indiana, on 24 April 1867.

By about 1873 the family was in Illinois, where Rhoda was born. Ida was born about 1878. In June 1880 the census found them at Cotton Hill Township, Sangamon County. John was thirty-six and farming, and Elizabeth was thirty-seven and keeping house. All five children were at home. Hattie, eighteen, "works by the week".

His children married in central Illinois. Hattie married Briant Barker in 1884. Mary F. married George T. Wagoner in Christian County in 1888, and Rhoda married Peter Deweese at Taylorville in 1889. Both brides named their parents as John Sullivan and Elizabeth Weir. George became a teamster and died at Litchfield in 1945. When or where John died is not known.

The family's ages do not quite agree. At thirty-six in 1880 he would have been seventeen when Hattie was born. One or more of the recorded ages is probably wrong.
