John Marsh was at Hartford in Connecticut by 1636. There he married Anne, a daughter of John Webster, later governor of the colony. Their first son, Joseph, was baptised on 24 January 1647 and died soon after. A second Joseph was baptised on 15 July 1649. Then came John, Samuel, Jonathan, Daniel, Hannah and Grace. Hannah, born about 1655, married Joseph Loomis of Windsor in 1675/6. Grace married Timothy Baker in 1672.

In 1659 or 1660 he moved with his wife and her father up the Connecticut River to Hadley in Massachusetts. Anne died on 9 June 1662. On 7 October 1664 he married Hephzibah, the widow of Richard Lyman of Northampton and a daughter of Thomas Ford. He moved to Northampton and had a daughter Lydia by her. He died in 1688.

His brother Joseph Marsh lived at Braintree in Essex. By a will of 1676 Joseph left an estate in England to John's children, and they obtained it by a suit at law. John Marsh very probably came from that part of England.
