John McCollum
John W. McCollum married Frances C. Beam in Cherokee County, Georgia on 6 May 1852. The ceremony was performed by a Geo. W. McCollum, justice of the peace, very probably a kinsman. Frances was an orphan of about twenty one, raised since 1849 by her aunt under a court guardianship.
Their son Thomas Melvin was born in October 1858 or 1859. In August 1867 John W. registered to vote in Fair Play District, precinct 1028, of Cherokee County, under the Reconstruction Acts.
Find a Grave gives a fuller life, without sources. It names him John Wesley McCollum, born on 16 December 1827 in Habersham County, son of John Washington McCollum Sr. and Hannah Cantrell. It gives him a second wife, Evaline Cotton Tumlin, born in 1845, and a death in 1899 in Bartow County, with burial at Oothcalooga Baptist Church near Adairsville under a rock that has since gone.
When Thomas Melvin died at Woodstock in 1925, his certificate named his father as John McCollum, born in Georgia.
