John McCullough
John McCullough farmed in Neshoba County, Mississippi. His wife Nancy died at their home about 1853. The enslaved woman Manda, who was Nancy's own property, stayed in his household after her death and had two daughters there.
He married again. When he died in April 1861 he left a widow, Kizziah McCullough, who petitioned the Probate Court as "widow of John McCullough late of said County deceased". His son Marion was made administrator of his estate. On 22 July 1861 Marion told the court that the estate was "of an unproductive and perishable nature" and should be sold at once, and on 24 July he posted the notice of sale at the courthouse door: a lot of wheat and sundry articles, cash for anything under five dollars and notes with security for the rest.
In the same weeks his eldest living son, Mathew, was administering Nancy's estate, and the court listed John's children by her: Mathew, Marion, John, Benjamin, Nancy, wife of Cornelius Harris, and William, with four grandchildren whose parent had already died.
