John Monroe
John Monroe kept a farming household at Prairie Township, in Lincoln County, Missouri, on the rolling ground west of the river above St. Louis. There were six children, named with their birth dates in the widow's pension declarations: David Anthony in 1850, James Thomas in 1852, Sarah Frances in 1855, Abraham in 1857, Cynthia Ann in 1859 and John Henderson in 1862.
He is in his own household in 1860 with his wife Rebecca and five children under ten. In February 1862 he enrolled as a private in Company G, 3rd Missouri State Militia Cavalry. The war in Missouri was not fought at a front but along the roads and in the farmyards of counties like this one, and on 22 or 23 September 1864 he was killed by bushwhackers at or near Rocheport, in Boone County.
The children stayed put and married in the county, and the courthouse books catch them one after another: Abraham to Melissa Womble, James T. to Margaret J. Hancock, John H. to Margaret E. Presley. Fifty years on, the 1910 census finds John H. at Hawk Point with his wife Margaret E. and his older brother James T. under the same roof.
