John Niles

John Niles was born on 11 April 1769 at Easton, in Bristol County, Massachusetts, in the old Taunton North Purchase country. His parents were Nahum Niles, who lived from 1739 to 1825, and Susanna Cole. His father was a French and Indian War veteran of the town. John was the migrant of the Niles line. After the Revolution the family moved to central New York, part of the great Yankee movement into the military-tract and Chenango country in the 1790s, and he went with them.

He married Lydia Bryant. Their intention of marriage was entered at Chesterfield, Massachusetts, on 26 October 1792, and they removed to Madison and Lebanon in Madison County, New York. There they raised their son Edwin R. Niles on the Madison County land.

John and Lydia were kin before they married. His mother Susanna was a daughter of Joseph Cole, and Lydia's mother Joanah was a daughter of Ebenezer Cole. Both of them also descended from John Churchill, the Plymouth immigrant, he through Eliezer Churchill and she through William. Through Mary Stephens, his mother's mother, he descended from Eliezer Churchill's wife Mary Doty, the daughter of Edward Doty, who came in the Mayflower in 1620.

He died in 1831. He and Lydia lie at Smith Valley Cemetery in Hamilton, among five generations of the family buried there.
