John Phillips
John Phillips was born at Dunfermline, Fife, in September 1797, according to a Find a Grave memorial. He married Christiana Addison, also born at Dunfermline, in 1799. They lived at Paisley in Renfrewshire, where their son William Addison was born in 1824 and their daughter Margaret in 1826.
In 1839 the family left Scotland for Randolph County, Illinois. A museum panel at Salina tells it: "Christina Addison Phillips and her husband, John, came from Scotland to Randolph County, Illinois, in 1839. They settled near her brothers William and David Addison." Other accounts give the year as 1838.
John died in Randolph County on 17 February 1842, about three years after arriving. The panel says he died "leaving Christina to rear their five children." Where he was buried is not known.
His widow took the younger children west. His son William became a journalist in Kansas, founded the town of Salina in 1858, and later sat in Congress. Christiana followed him to Salina in 1860 with their son Maxwell and died there in 1893, fifty-one years a widow. Her headstone names her "Wife Of JOHN PHILLIPS."
