John Richard Maudsley Sr.

John Richard Maudsley was born on November 7, 1854 at Rutledgedale, Wayne County, Pennsylvania. His father George Mawdsley came from Leyland in Lancashire, and his mother Margaret Collins from Glasgow. He was the first of their children born in America. Most of the family came to spell the name Maudsley, and he did too.

On October 29, 1879 he married Amanda Lorella Rhodes of Boyds Mills. In 1880 the couple were farming in Damascus Township, John 25 and Amanda 21. By 1900 they were in Manchester Township, and they stayed there on the hill farms around Lookout for the rest of their lives. The censuses of 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 all find him there, a farmer.

John and Amanda had twelve children between 1880 and 1904: Margaret, William George, Henry, Sarah, Earl, the twins Ezra and Ellis, Orin, Rachel, Ruth, John Harold and Mildred. The eldest, Margaret, died in 1909, a few days after giving birth. Four of the sons went to the First World War. Two sons settled in New Jersey, one in Binghamton, and two daughters ended their lives in Florida. Most of the others stayed within a few miles of Lookout.

He took part in the life of the place. In 1909 his name was on the list of subscribers to the Big Eddy Telephone Company line from Lookout to Pine Mills. In the summer of 1910 the local branch of the Dairymen's League, the farmers' cooperative that bargained for milk prices, met in the church basement and elected him its delegate to the convention at Middletown, New York.

John Richard Maudsley died at Lookout on August 8, 1934, aged 79. He is buried in the Lookout United Methodist Church Cemetery in Damascus Township. Amanda outlived him by four years and was buried beside him under one stone.
