John Spooner

John Spooner was born at Plymouth before 28 April 1648. That was the day his mother, Elizabeth Partridge, died. His father, William Spooner, had come to Plymouth in 1637 as an indentured servant, bound to work for a master for a term of years. William later moved to Dartmouth, and John lived there all his adult life.

He was trusted with the town's roads. On 16 October 1669 he sat on the jury that laid out the county road from Middleborough and Bridgewater toward Boston. He was surveyor of highways at Dartmouth in 1686, 1699 and 1700.

He held other offices as well. He sat on the town council in 1690 and was a grand juror in 1702. In 1710 Dartmouth elected him its representative.

He married twice. His son John, born 2 July 1668, is taken to be the child of a first wife whose name is not known. His later children were by Rebecca Peckham, a daughter of John Peckham of Newport. Dartmouth recorded each of them as a son or daughter of John: Jonathan in 1681, Elizabeth on 19 June 1683, Elenor in 1685, Phebe in 1687, Deborah in 1694 and Barnabas in 1699. The family genealogy adds William in 1680, Nathan in 1689 and Rebecca in 1691.

In 1712 Rebecca's brother James Peckham died at Newport. John and Rebecca Spooner signed with the other heirs to empower the sale of his estate.

His homestead lay by the mill pond, between the Jennys' land and his son Samuel's. His daughter Elizabeth married Joseph Taber. On 24 April 1730 John gave his son Nathan land "lying to ye northward of Joseph Taber's homestead". He was still living in February 1734.
