John Steele
John Steele was born in Essex in England. He married Rachel Talcott at Fairstead, near Braintree. She was a daughter of John Talcott of Braintree and Anne Skinner, and a sister of John Talcott Jr., who became one of the early proprietors of Hartford.
He came to New England about 1631 or 1632 and settled first at New Town, which was soon renamed Cambridge. From there he moved with the first company to Hartford on the Connecticut River. The family genealogy of 1919 calls him "secretary of the colony from 1634 to 1639." The secretary kept the colony's records, entering its laws, orders and land grants. Later he moved again, to Farmington, the new town west of Hartford.
His son John married Mary Warner at Hartford in January 1645/6 and died at Farmington in 1653, before his father. Rachel died the same year. John Steele then married Mercy, the widow of Richard Seymour. He died at Farmington on 25 November 1665.
