John Thompson
John Thompson was born in Vermont on 6 October 1808, by the age on his grave plaque. The censuses made him younger: the 1870 census gives his age as fifty-six, a birth about 1814.
He married Martha J. Page, another Vermonter, eighteen years younger, in Rock County, Wisconsin, on 14 June 1852. They lived at Pleasant Springs in Dane County, where their son Ezra was born in 1859, and then at Washington in Sauk County. In 1870 the household there held John, Martha and eight children, all born in Wisconsin: Henry, Emma, Ezra, Flora, Frank, Carrie, Lois M. and William. A daughter, Alice Sabra, later Mrs Rhinehart, is given by her memorial as born on 9 August 1850, two years before the marriage.
He died on 22 September 1885 and is buried at Loyd Cemetery in Richland County. His metal plaque reads "JOHN THOMPSON, DIED SEPT. 22, 1885, AGED 76 Y'RS 11 MO'S 16 D'YS". Martha lived until 1899 and lies beside him.
