Born 1786, Inchinnan, Renfrewshire, Scotland
Died 1849

John Whitehill was born at Inchinnan, Renfrewshire, Scotland, in April 1786. He was the only son of James Whitehill and his first wife, Mary Mitchell. His mother died in Scotland. In 1798, when John was twelve, his father and uncle bought the Witherspoon tract in Ryegate, Vermont, and the family crossed the Atlantic.

John settled on part of the tract, next south of his father's farm. He was a very large man and was called "Big Jock."

In 1812 he married Anna Welch, of the Welch family of Groton. They had eleven children in fourteen years: James in 1813, John in 1814, Mary in 1816, William on 25 March 1817, Peter in 1818, Elizabeth in 1819, Anna in 1820, David in 1822, Nancy in 1823, Hannah in 1825 and Christian on 5 April 1826. Anna died eight days after Christian's birth, on 13 April 1826, aged 35.

On 14 March 1827 John married Betsey Emery of Groton. They had nine more children: Sarah, Lucinda, Janet, Juliett, Emeline, Matthew, the twins Moses and Aaron, and Hugh. Aaron died as a baby. All the others were living in 1863.

In 1844 John moved to Morgan, in Orleans County near the Canadian border. On 15 November 1849 he died there while chopping alone in the woods. He was 63 years, 6 months and 15 days old. He was brought back to Groton and buried in the Groton-Peacham Cemetery with Anna. Their slate stone reads "John Whitehill died Nov. 15, 1849, Ae. 63 yrs. 6 mos. 15 days" and below it "Anna, wife of John Whitehill, died April 13, 1826, Ae. 35 yrs." Betsey died in Morgan.
