Jonas Humphrey
Jonas Humphrey came from Wendover in Buckinghamshire, where his children Elizabeth, James and Sarah were baptised in 1608, 1610 and 1613. He is said to have been the constable there.
On 8 November 1619, at Turville, he married Elizabeth (Seamer) Foster, the widow of Thomas Foster, a Wendover fuller. She brought four young Foster children into the marriage: Christian, Elizabeth, Thomas and Susanna. Their own son Jonas was baptised at Wendover in 1621.
He came to Dorchester, in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, in the 1630s and worked there as a tanner. His tan pits were remembered long afterwards. His wife Elizabeth was with him by September 1637. A daughter Sarah was buried at Dorchester in September 1638. His stepdaughter Susanna Foster married Nicholas White of Dorchester about 1643.
Elizabeth died before about 1651, when he married Jane, the widow of George Weeks. He died at Dorchester on 19 March 1662. His will, made a week before, was proved on 17 April 1662. It named his wife, his son Jonas, his grandchild Elizabeth Foy, and "my daughter Susanna White". She was his stepdaughter, named in the way stepchildren commonly were. His widow Jane died on 2 August 1668. His son Jonas settled at Weymouth.
