Jonathan Hadlock was a brother of Joseph Hadlock, who came to South Weare in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, about 1760 from Kingston. Jonathan married Betty Pettee and settled at Weare as well. He had a house on lot 53 in the third range of the town.

Weare kept careful accounts of what it owed its soldiers, and Jonathan Hadlock is on them twice. He was one of the men the town paid for going to Cambridge for six weeks during the siege of Boston, a turn the town's lists date to 1775 in one place and 1776 in another. In July 1777 he was one of the fifteen men Weare sent to serve under John Stark, for two and a half months. Stark's brigade was the New Hampshire militia raised that summer against General Burgoyne's invasion from Canada. On 16 August 1777 it destroyed the German and loyalist force sent to raid for horses and supplies near Bennington, killing its commander, Colonel Baum, and taking several hundred prisoners. The town's list says only that he went under Stark, not where he stood that day.

He and Betty had ten children, all recorded at Weare: Abigail, born 19 March 1769, who died in April; Samuel, 18 June 1770; Hezekiah, 10 August 1772; Jonathan, 28 November 1774; Joseph, 4 March 1777; Betty, 24 March 1779; Peter, 17 September 1781; Miriam, 2 March 1784; Rhoda, 1786; and Stephen, 20 February 1790.

In the 1790s the family moved north to Bath, a new town on the Ammonoosuc River in Grafton County. Samuel's children were being born there by 1795. On the Bath inventory of 1798 Jonathan Hadlock was taxed for one poll, four acres of mowing, two of tillage and sixty of wild land, a horse, two oxen, two cows and young cattle. His sons Samuel, Jonathan, Hezekiah and Joseph were on the same list. He had deeded land at Bath to Hezekiah before 1818. His daughter Betty, called Betsey, married the joiner and Continental veteran Samuel Chase at Bath in 1800.

From Bath, by the account of a history of Weare printed in 1888, he went on "with all his family to Jay, Vt., where he and his wife died." Jay is a hill town in Orleans County on the Canadian line. Hadlocks were among its first settlers; his son Samuel and Samuel's wife Miriam were there by 1830, and Samuel Chase and Betsey followed in 1829. Peter went over the line to Shipton in Lower Canada, Hezekiah to Guildhall in Vermont, and Samuel later to De Kalb, New York.
