Joseph Betscher was born on 31 December 1824 in Baden, a son of Michael Betscher of Ringsheim and his wife Maria Anna. His father sailed from London in April 1849, and Joseph came over the next year.
In 1854 he bought eighty one and a quarter acres in Colerain Township, Hamilton County, jointly with Melchior and Amand Betscher, and on 18 November 1856 he and Amand sold out to Melchior for 2,700 dollars, his wife Martina signing the deed with him. On 5 November 1859 his father sold him the Dry Ridge farm for 2,645 dollars. His daughter Martina was born in January 1860, and Rosa on 28 July 1861 at White Oak in Green Township, in the German Catholic farming country west of Cincinnati.
In 1910 he was living in his daughter Elizabeth Wiwi's house in Cincinnati Ward 19, aged eighty five. He died at Cincinnati on 5 November 1912, aged eighty seven, and is buried at Saint Mary's, Saint Bernard, with Martina and Rosa. His own death certificate answers both parent columns with UNKNOWN; his parents are named on his brothers' records and in his father's deed.
