Joseph Chase

Joseph Chase was born at Newbury on 25 March 1677 and died at Littleton in 1763, having lived eighty six years and moved house once. He was the only son of Sergeant Aquila Chase and Esther Bond to outlive his father, which put the whole of the family's land and the whole of the family's obligations on him at once.

He married Abigail Thurston at Newbury on 8 November 1699. She was the youngest of the twelve children of Daniel Thurston and Anne Pell, and five of her elder brothers and sisters had died as infants before she was born. Nine children followed. The eldest was born at Salisbury and the rest at Newbury.

When his father died intestate in 1720 he was forty three, and he and his mother were appointed administrators of the estate. He took his own share and bought the rights of three of his sisters so that the land would not be split nine ways, then sold the buildings and the seven acres that came with them to his brother in law Daniel Merrill, keeping his mother's dower out of the sale.

In 1726 he left the coast. The family went from what is now West Newbury inland to Littleton in Middlesex County, about forty miles, and he stayed there the last thirty seven years of his life. No administration of his estate appears on the Middlesex County records, so what he had at the end and who got it are not known.
