Joseph Cowles
Joseph Cowles was baptised at East Hartford, Connecticut, on 13 January 1694/5. He was a son of Timothy Cowles and Hannah Pitkin, and a grandson of Samuel Cowles of Farmington.
He married Mary Goodwin, a daughter of Deacon John Goodwin and Sarah Skinner. She had been baptised on 18 January 1701/2. Their children were Joseph in 1726, Eleazer in 1728, Asa in 1732, Abijah in 1734, Elisha, Mary in 1736 and Sarah.
In 1725 he was deputy sheriff of Hartford County. In 1728 he was collector for the Ecclesiastical Society. That was the parish body, separate from the town, that levied a rate on its members to pay the minister and keep the meetinghouse.
He made his will on 14 August 1770, when Mary was still living. It disposed of lands in East Hartford and in New Hartford, a hill town to the northwest. He died at East Hartford on 20 February 1775, and his gravestone gives the date. The will was probated on 18 March. His son Asa died eleven weeks after him.
