Joseph Hickox
Joseph Hickox subscribed the Mattatuck articles in 1674 and took a sixty pound allotment in the plantation that became Waterbury. He was there early, but his own historian doubts he was ever there in a steady way: his name is in the first, second and fourth divisions of fence and not in the third.
He lived next west of his brother Sergeant Samuel Hickox, between him and Philip Judd, on a lot of two acres bounded north on common land. In the early part of 1686 he removed to Woodbury, in the part now Southbury, joined the church there on 2 May 1686, and died the next year. His estate came to a hundred and seven pounds in Waterbury and a hundred in Woodbury.
His historian's verdict on him is one sentence: only the scantiest memorials remain of Joseph Hickox, first. He was the first proprietor that left the settlement, and the first that died.
His daughter Mary married Joseph Gaylord at Waterbury on 8 February 1699/1700, thirteen years after his death, and the deed that records his son selling the Waterbury lot in 1690 calls the buyer, William Hickox, a cousin.
