Joseph L. Spinks

Joseph L. Spinks was born in Mississippi on 12 September 1838 and died in Mills County, Texas, on 10 March 1909, in his seventy-first year. He is buried at Mullin. His parents are not known. He was in Texas by 1861, and no record of the move is known.

He married Eliza Cheek at Tyler, in east Texas, on 4 July 1861. He was twenty-two and she was twenty-one. Texas had voted to leave the Union that February, and Fort Sumter had been fired on in April, so they married in the first summer of the war.

The family moved west across the state as the frontier opened. In 1870 they were in Justice Precinct 4 of Leon County, indexed under the mangled surname Sprinke, and in 1880 in Johnson County. Their son Joseph Monroe was born in Falls County on 28 July 1874. A daughter, B. Annie E. Spinks, born 13 October 1865 and later Ferguson, is buried at Mullin beside them and was probably theirs. Her name points the same way, since Eliza's mother was Belinda Key.

By 1900 they were at Justice Precinct 3 in Mills County, he sixty-one and she fifty-nine, with that same son, then twenty-five, in the house with them. That census enters him as Joe L. Spinks. He died there nine years later, and his children and grandchildren were buried after him at Mullin. Joseph Monroe died at Goldthwaite in 1949, and his death certificate names his father as J. L. Spinks.
