Joseph Stafford
Born on 21 March 1648 at Warwick, a younger son of Thomas Stafford the miller and his wife Elizabeth. On 11 April 1661, three weeks after his thirteenth birthday, he was apprenticed to Thomas Smith, tailor, of Pawtuxet, and the indenture was reckoned from the twenty first of March last past, which is the birthday itself. He was made a freeman of the colony in 1678.
He married Sarah, daughter of Randall Holden, one of the Gortonist founders of Warwick, and of his wife Frances Dungan. They had eight children who lived to be named in her will: Stukeley, Joseph and John, and Frances, Elizabeth, Mary, Margaret and Sarah. The eldest son carried the name Stukeley, which had come into Warwick with the Westcotts and had already passed into the Stafford family through his aunt Deborah's marriage to Amos Westcott.
When his father died in 1677 the homestead went to the eldest son Thomas and Joseph got a calf. He was living in 1697 and died at some point after that. He left a will, which is known only because his widow's own will refers to it, and no abstract of it has been read.
