Joseph Stetson
Joseph Stetson was born at Scituate, in Plymouth Colony, in June 1639. The town book enters him as "Joseph, s. Robert, June, 1639." He was the eldest son of Cornet Robert Stetson, who had been granted a farm on the North River in 1634.
He married Prudence, whose surname is not known. He lived at Scituate, and in the words of the Stetson family history "seems to have passed his days in comparative retirement, as his name is not conspicuous in the annals of the town or church."
His children were entered at Scituate as children of "Joseph Sr.", to tell him from his son. Joseph was born in 1667, "eldest s. Joseph," and baptized that June. Robert followed on 9 December 1670, Lois in March 1672, William in December 1673, Desire in September 1676, Prudence in September 1678, Samuel in December 1679 and Hannah in June 1682. William died in 1699 at twenty five, without children. Desire married Richard Sylvester of Scituate in 1703, and Prudence married Ebenezer Leach of Bridgewater in 1707. His son Joseph married Hannah Oldham in 1688.
He made his will on 4 April 1722. It names his wife Prudence, his daughter Lois, by then married to a Ford, and his daughter Hannah Lincoln. He died before 8 May 1724, when his estate was inventoried.
