Joseph Toothman

b. 1827 · Magisterial District 5
Born 1827, Marion County, then Virginia
Children include Mary

Joseph Toothman married Barbary Satterfield on 30 August 1846 in Marion County, while it was still Virginia. He was about nineteen and she about seventeen.

The 1860 census of Magisterial District 5 has him at thirty three with Barbara at thirty one and five children: William E. thirteen, Thomas eight, Mary E. six, Sarah A. three and Daniel W. one, with a Melinda Toothman of thirty in the house as well.

His name is Joseph. His son George's certificate of 1919 calls him Jos., and only one document says otherwise. Mary Elizabeth's death return of 1933 gives her father as Jacob Toothman, and it is the only thing that does. The marriage return of 1846 and the census of 1860 both say Joseph. Jacob and Joseph are the pair of names a grieving informant swaps most easily, and the contemporary record wins.

Toothman is thick in Marion and Doddridge counties, probably an anglicised German name, and nothing documents where it came from.

One more son came after the 1860 census. George W. Toothman was born on 4 March 1861 in Marion County. He spent his working life at Fairmont as a school janitor and died there of heart failure on 5 October 1919, aged fifty eight. His wife gave the clerk his parents: Jos. Toothman and Barba Satterfield, both born in West Virginia.
