Josephus S. Slaughter
Josephus S. Slaughter was born on 2 September 1848. Every census of his childhood says he was born in Indiana. In 1850 he was two and living in Liberty Township, Hendricks County, Indiana, the township of the village of Clayton, west of Indianapolis.
He grew up in the household of Pleasant Slaughter, a Virginian, and his wife Elizabeth, from Tennessee. The family was in Liberty Township in 1850, in Boon Township, Cass County, in 1860, and in Van Buren Township, Clay County, in 1870, where Josephus was twenty one.
In the spring of 1873 he took out a license in Hendricks County to marry Ida P. Thomas, who was not yet sixteen. Their daughter Olive Jane was born in October 1874. James Angus followed in 1879, Sarah Agnes in 1881 and Bertha Elizabeth in 1884. Olive married James Bullock in Douglas County, Illinois, in 1891.
Josephus worked as a miner. The family later lived at Galena, a lead and zinc mining town in Cherokee County, Kansas, where Ida died in October 1921.
By 1930 he was living in Joplin, Missouri, just across the state line. In his last years he lived at 2804 Joplin Street, in the home of his grandson Wayne Bullock. He died there at eight in the evening on 17 November 1939, aged ninety one years, two months and fifteen days. The doctor wrote senility and arteriosclerosis. His funeral was held on 19 November, and he was taken back across the line and buried in Oak Hill Cemetery at Galena beside Ida. The Kansas City Times ran the news the next morning under the headline "Rites for Mining Pioneer". It said he had come to the district to go into mining forty five years before, about 1894.
Wayne Bullock gave the facts for the certificate. He said his grandfather had been born at Clayton, Illinois, and that his father was Aaron Slaughter, also of Clayton. He did not know the mother's name. Wayne had himself been born at Clayton, Indiana, in 1892, and the Clayton the family knew was almost certainly that one.
