Died 1690
Father: Simon Hoyt
Mother: Susanna Hoyt
Children include Samuel

Joshua Hoyt was a son of Simon Hoyt, one of the first settlers of Charlestown, and his wife Susanna. He was born by 1641, probably at Windsor, Connecticut, and grew up at Fairfield and Stamford, where his father died in 1657.

He appears in the Stamford records in many spellings. In 1661 "Joshwah Hyet" is named on the boundary of another man's land. In 1662 he is Joshua Hoyte, and in 1665 "Joshwah Hioght", a witness. In 1667 he was on the town lists and received a share in the horse pasture. The same year the town chose "Joshwah Hiot" its "Dromer", to have twenty shillings a year. The drummer beat the drum that called the town to meeting and to worship, and was a paid town officer. In 1669 he was propounded to the General Court for freeman "in Standford".

Joshua was the administrator of his father's estate. Between 1662 and 1666 his brothers and brothers-in-law signed receipts to him for their full portions of it. In 1674 he paid out his mother Susanna's estate in the same way. On 25 February 1669 a town meeting voted that "Joshua Hoit shall haue a house lott at ye swamp beyond goodman Amblers". He recorded his housing and lands on the Stamford land records, Book A, page 41.

He married Mary, probably the daughter of Francis and Rebecca Bell of Stamford. They had at least seven children, among them Samuel, born in 1678, who became the town smith. Joshua died at Stamford in 1690. Mary survived him.
