Josiah Harvey
Josiah Harvey married Dorcas Woodward at Taunton, Massachusetts, on 12 January 1737. The clerk entered them as "Josiah and Dorcas Woodward, both of T.", both of Taunton. He was born about 1699.
By the 1740s the couple were living at Norton, the town just north of Taunton. Their daughter Tabitha was born there on 5 October 1742.
On 7 February 1748/9 the Bristol County probate court committed the estate of "Mr Thomas Harvey late of Taunton ... yeoman" to "Mrs Mary Harvey of Taunton & Josiah Harvey of Norton". A yeoman was a farmer who owned his land. As administrators, Mary and Josiah had to gather the estate, pay its debts and divide what was left. Thomas and Mary were very probably Josiah's parents. The Harvey Book of 1899 names them as his parents and says the family were Friends, or Quakers.
In September 1763 Josiah gave bond at the county court for his daughter. Abner Williams, a minor, was charged with "Endeavouring a rape on the body of Tabitha Harvey". Tabitha was bound over to testify, and because she was under age her father entered the bond for her.
His son Josiah was living in 1803. By November of that year Josiah the elder was dead, and Dorcas was a widow at Norton.
