Julia Ann Howell
Julia Ann Howell was born in New York on 14 February 1845, in Niagara County by a memorial to her. Her family moved west to Michigan.
On 9 August 1862, at seventeen, she married Daniel Thurston in St. Joseph County, Michigan. That year he went into the Union army as a private in Company E of the 19th Michigan Infantry.
Julia had at least seven children. Florence Belle was born about 1870, Cora Rachel about 1873, and Franklin Pierce in Iowa in 1876. Bernice Harriet followed in 1879, and then in Kansas Phillip Sheridan in 1882, Maude Melvina in 1884 and Chester Arthur in 1886.
In 1900 she was 55 and living with Daniel on their farm in Catherine and Saline Townships of Ellis County, Kansas, where the census called her Julia C. Thurston and recorded 38 years of marriage.
Julia died in Ellis County on 3 November 1911, aged 66. She is buried at Norman Cemetery, and her name is cut below Daniel's on their stone: "Julia A. His Wife 1845 - 1911".
